Travelling abroad for the Easter Holidays has become into one of the most popular activities in recent years. Even though the trip lasts for a short time, people enjoy visiting new places and getting to know other cultures. One of these places that is visited is the city of Cancun (well-known among American and Canadian tourists). This gorgeous city has a lot to offer: white beaches, turquoise water, fun activities and amazing hotels (you can find impressive luxurious hotels in Cancun). But what can you do in Cancun during Easter?

Cancun

First, let me tell you a little bit about Cancun. The city of Cancun is located in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo in the Yucatan Peninsula and it is widely called the entrance gate to the Mayan World because it was a significant part of the ancient Mayan civilization. The history of Cancun as a tourist destination begins in 1967 when the Mexican government decided it was time to develop the tourism industry and began searching for places that seemed ideal to boost the economic growth of the country. From that moment, Cancun was renovated and its face changed completely but, of course, the historical archaeological sites were not damaged and have always been protected. Nowadays, Cancun boasts a modern infrastructure, amenities, venues and entertaiment activities in order to receive the 3.3 million tourists each year.

Easter in Cancun

Easter is one of the best times to visit Cancun; the typical weather during that time is quite hot (29C/85F during daytime and 22C/73F at night). If you are worried about cloudy or stormy days, let me tell you that it does not rain much in April and when it does, the rain does not last long. With such a beautiful weather, it is expected that you want to spend all day at the beach; luckily, in Cancun, you can do so much more than just lying on the beach. There is a wide range of activities for tourists who enjoy of water sports such as swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, jet skiing, surfing and many more. However, this is not it; during Easter Week, you will be able to see many festivities in the street most of which are religious and many others who will be just for entertainment like smashing eggs filled with confetti.

Churches to Visit

If you are a religious person, you will surely want to visit a local church in order to respect the Catholic tradition of praying and following the Stations/Way of the cross better known as the Via Crucis. Fortunately, as Cancun is mainly Catholic, there are a bunch of places you can choose from. For example, in the downtown area there is the Cristo Rey Church on 15 Margaritas Street and in the hotel zone, you will find the Resurrection of the Lord Church on Blvd. Kukulcan Km 3, the Camino Real on Blvd. Kukulcan Km 9, the Fiesta Americana Coral Beach (hotel which hosts mass celebrations) and the El Pueblito Hotel. Besides attending church, you have to remember that for the entire Easter Week you can participate in religious processions and witness reenactments of biblical stories.

All in all, Cancun is the perfect destination to spend your mini Easter vacations. It is a place full of life and it is waiting for you to explore and keep discovering it. I am sure you will fall in love with it immediately. So come and see it for yourself if you did not think that tourism and religion in Cancun during the 2014 Easter Holidays cannot coexist.
